i’m fully aware i haven’t been updating the least bit about Uni life ever since i’ve ventured into it.
well there’s one reason for that: it just isn’t well, blog-worthy.
nonetheless, i shall make a feeble attempt to summarise the past month.
1. me, the clueless chick, takes three level 2 modules, one level 1 module and even one level 3 module in my very first semester. do note, most year 1s take start out with five level 1 modules. to put matters simply, what’s believed is that:
level 1 modules: idiot-proof
level 2 modules: might need abit of brain work
level 3 modules: you need to stop gaming in lectures and concentrate
level 4 modules: ho sey liao.
the reason for my cluelessness is due to my shaved off modules. yes, i get to graduate one semester early since i get to skip five modules. (hah, take that you JC-ers!)
so i was thinking gleefully to myself, since i get to skip the modules, i might as well take some of the harder modules first.
ambitious, i am.
turns out, hey, it wasn’t such a bad choice afterall, because quite honestly, the level 2 and 3 modules aren’t all that hard.
i suppose it’s the fear of venturing out of the norm that keeps the students tied to their "year 1, level 1 modules" mentality. yes, i’m talking about the JC peeps here.
i’m not being biased! 90% of them come from JCs anyway, so even if i were to randomly throw a poisoned dart around, the possibility of it hitting a kiasi JC student in the temple is relatively high.
but i digress.
so anyway, when some of the yr 2s and 3s in my level 2 and 3 modules knew i was the only freshman in class, they kept making funny eyes at me, with some going rather sarcastically, "wah, you very brave ah, i applaud your courage."
i would very much like to make them eat their sarcasm when i get my grades but i’ll have to wait till the end of the semester to do that, provided i do score well. -coughs-
2. more evidence to showcase the kiasi-ness of the JC peeps.
in one of my level 2 modules, my group mates were begging the facilitator to allow them a change in presentation time slots, because according to them, "this week i already have another presentation. the following week after that, i have a test. i’ll be very stressed!" -insert so-worried-i’m-about-to-cry look-
uhhh huh.
there’s a term known as "multi-tasking" in case you haven’t heard. besides, when you go out into the working world, what makes you think your boss gives a flying fuck if you have 3 presentations to make in a week?
once again, i am assuming they are JC peeps because like what i mentioned earlier, 90% of the people here are from there. besides, the people from JCs generally look less cool. -flips hair-
3. the people in Uni take their studies very seriously.
or at least that’s what i can tell from my observations made in lectures.
they’re all hunched over their desks copying notes furiously. even those with their laptops open, they’re either typing intently on their powerpoint decks, or on Word. imagine, no Facebook, no Twittering, no blogs, no MSN.
sounds impossible isn’t it?
do note, in the one and a half month since i’ve started school, i’ve only noticed one, ONE, 1! student surfing ASOS during a lecture, and she wasn’t even a local student. she was from the exchange programme.
i must applaud her for her good taste though, the clothes she was bio-ing were all quite chio.
so while i was intially rather disturbed by this strange phenomenon, wondering if the problem lied with me instead, (why do i get this strange urge to constantly sms! read magazines! tweet! not concentrate!) i have now came to realize that just because you appear dilligent during lectures, this does not necessarily show in the quality of your brain.
why so? two main points:
the first, these students, they seem to be under a hypnotic trance once the lecturer starts speaking. in fact, i believe their personal mantra is "NO MATTER WHAT THE LECTURER SAYS, WHETHER IMPORTANT OR NOT, JUST COPY."
so even when the prof says something irrelevant, or unimportant, they’re still conscientiously scribbling away.
they often serve as a form of amusement for me when i get bored during lectures, so i’m not complaining.
second, when it comes to tutorials, you see the same students from above answering questions and sounding not-quite-so-smart.
and when the facilitator questions their reply, this dumbfounded look washes across their faces, following which they’ll extract their lecture notes from their hello kitty files and start frantically flipping through them.
their reactions are quite priceless, and too serve as a form of amusement for me when i get bored during tutorials, so i’m also not complaining.
but anyway, the point of point number 3 is to tell you that hey, i’m actually the normal one out there. -nods-
4. to date, i have yet to find a clubbing khaki in the form of Uni mates.
these people chiong home after classes, chiong to the nearby table during a break and chiong to print notes. how to be party animal when you’re a chao mugger?!
5. i’m still a lost child and bloody lazy bum when it comes to public transport.
every morning, i take the train to clementi station, afterwhich i cab it to school. not because i’m late, but because i still haven’t quite figured out where and which bus i should board in order to make my way to the arts faculty.
so just in case i do get lost and arrive late for classes, i should play it safe and take a cab instead, hor?
and that, is the thought process that goes through my head every single morning as i make my way to the taxi stand.
6. my exams are in two weeks.
and i’m surprisingly calm.
maybe it’s cause the midterms only happen for two modules, and these are the relatively easier modules. so i should be able to do okay for them.
i think. -blinks-
7. i am now a readhead.
er, yea.
not that this point has anything to do with Uni, but i sincerely believe by morphing into a redhead, my sex appeal has increased tenfolds.
just saying!

Err, in case you haven’t realized, graduating one sem early would still make you older than the other girls when THEY grad.
I also suggest you stop making yourself out to be so smart, you will know when you get your grades. It isn’t as easy as you make it out to be. You can scoff at other people’s kiasu-ness, and make yourself out to be oh-so-cool, but judging from this entry, I can tell that you’re not very intelligent.
Ironic how you seem so smart alec, but you can’t even figure out the bus number? It’s 96 you bimbo. 1.5 months in sch and you can’t even figure it out?
And no, you don’t look hot. You seem to have an inferior complex, and no matter how much you binge, you are not hot. I’m sure deep down inside, you know you’re ugly like fuck. Stop hiding your face when you take pictures, is it because you are afraid people will say you’re ugly?
Yes my friend passed your blog to me, saying, ” Don’t EVER be like this girl…” and yes, we scoff at you Poly people. CMI so you try to put other people down to make yourself feel better.
Comment by tsunami — September 18, 2009 @ 2:17 pm
oh look, my first hate comment!
anyway, look, you torrent of water, firstly, i don’t give a shit if i’m older than them when i graduate, nobody really gives a shit about how old you are when you go out there, it’s all about working experience.
secondly, i don’t make myself out to sound smart, i know for a fact that i am smart. i do know it’s bus 96 you know, i just can’t quite be bothered to actually find out where to take the bus from. my friends all know i’m an idiot when it comes to directions. since you’re such a know-it-all, why don’t you direct me the next time round?
thirdly, i never mentioned i looked hot, it was in jest that i made that quip abt the sex appeal. and binging doesn’t make me hot, it’s the purging darling. i do happen to have alot of pics where my face is showing on my faceboook, it’s just i lurrrve my long lashes, so i like showing them off.
so you’re one of those JC-ers eh? how about leaving down your grand name so we could continue this ‘poly VS JC’ war? it’s not very nice to make light of a disaster that killed hundreds of thousands of ppl, you know.

Hahahaha! Tsunami! you’re rite, this one fucking bimbotic. You’ve outdone yourself dude.
She doesn’t know where to take 96 from. It’s an INTERCHANGE. There is only ONE place to take 96 from. OMFG! HAHAHAHA! Joke of the century.
But huh…yuh not worth reading. She looks like fuck. Gimme RIS LOW anyday…at least chio.
BOOMSSSSS!

I dun geddit? Why must hate on Poly or JC students? I graduated from a JC, and am working on my 3rd degree now. I also taught at a Poly, and really enjoyed my time there.
Why do we have to divide ourselves in this manner? In the end isn’t everyone a university student?
All of you need to grow up (that includes you ms v) and realise that you’re all in this together
Comment by pmg — September 19, 2009 @ 9:08 am
Blog is personal views of the blogger on some things. So why get so affected by what they write? If you are affected by it, why read?
Chill lah! It’s just how she feels lah.
Comment by missbouncy — September 19, 2009 @ 12:52 pm
sam: low blow under the belt huh, very classy.
tiong: they won’t do that one, i appreciate your help nonetheless!
tehsi: mm hmm. maybe. 0.0
pmg: there’s no ‘hate’ on JC students, i’m merely taking a jibe at them. perhaps written in too offensive a manner, that i’m apologetic for.
we don’t have to divide ourselves in this manner yes, but if you look at certain circumstances where it’s clear there is a bias towards poly students, for instance here: http://msvindicta.blogsome.com/2009/04/ you’ll know why i have this sense of injustice. again, in the entry i’m taking a jibe at them.
missbouncy: thank you, you rounded it up perfectly.

Just a few days ago, I was debating with a friend over the JC v Poly issue, albeit on a completely different matter altogether.
But honestly just because we are in Singapore, JC students get the upper hand when they enter Uni. And I’m sure everybody knows that.
I hate to argue with my JC friends when they claim that JC is fucking stressed and poly people very sian-nang. It’s not true.
My main point is: there isn’t any hate pmg, but the way students want to compare with each other and say mean things without thinking about the consequences.
We need to learn how to take a step back.
Comment by thiang — September 19, 2009 @ 1:57 pm
very true. it’s all abt misconceptions, i won’t even mention the number of times i have to rebuke them when they say the poly students are very ’slack’.
Comment by Administrator — September 19, 2009 @ 2:58 pm
when a person post a dumb entry, what else to expect but dumb comments. honestly i nvr thought u were very smart but this entry is downright stupid. but of cuz missbouncy is right, its ur blog and u can feel free to write anything you like.
however if this is your perspective in viewing things then rest assure you won’t get far in life…no matter how “smart” you are.
oh, as for all the jibes or tongue-in-cheek or watever, sure but the image has set.
Comment by darkelfin — September 20, 2009 @ 10:04 am
i’d say to each their own, but to make things personal, that’s below the belt.
you know, there are points i actually agree with msv. the majority of people that do exactly what msv says in tutorials are actually from JC.
we are the epitome of the “cram and regurgitate” system. No contributions, just wait for teacher to give answer, copy, and paste 10 weeks later during exams.
There was a huge distinctive difference with the folks from poly that i met in uni too. more down to earth, willing to get their hands dirty. Maybe it’s cos they were never coddled like we were, told that they’re the creme da la creme.
But at the end of the day, it’s about results. not in school, where it’s just a piece of paper. but in life.
But hey, what do i know? i didn’t get honours in a direct honours course.
Comment by Vandalin — September 20, 2009 @ 12:28 pm
darkelfin: yea, you did let me know what you thought of my ‘perceived intelligence’ over msn before didn’t you? didn’t expect you to comment on this entry too since you thought it was dumb. such a waste of your time. you should go read smarter blogs.
vandalin: you’re still smart to me all the same even without the honours you silly boy!
Comment by Administrator — September 20, 2009 @ 2:27 pm
van: reading back my comment, i realised i was indeed too harsh with my words. the subject of the entry touched on a matter very close to my heart which i have extremely low tolerance of and when i read it, i snapped.
however, i stick with my opinion that if she persists with her views, it will not help her in life and babying her is not going to help her in the long run.
Comment by darkelfin — September 20, 2009 @ 5:49 pm
Why so srs?

Yo Msvindicta, I’m real happy for you and all and Imma let you finish, but Jessica Alba has the highest sex appeal of ALL TIME!
Comment by Kanya West — September 22, 2009 @ 1:19 am
darkelfin: yes, if i persist with my views that a bunch of JC students are relatively kia-si because they prove to be so in my tutorials, it will not help me in life and babying me is not going to help me in the long run.
that makes perfect, brilliant sense.
cyn: mm hmm! some ppl just don’t get the meaning of tongue-in-cheek.
kayne west: HAHAHA! that i have to agree with. jessica alba wins hands down, no argument there.
Comment by Administrator — September 22, 2009 @ 1:36 am
So by seeing some of the people in your class being hardworking in their own way is known as kia-si, then why cant the JC people say that those from the poly are more slack because that is what they see! You are being totally biased.
Also, different people has different styles of learning. Some may learn better when they write down, even though the things they write is non-relevant. Some may learn better by listening, which seems to be your preferred way of learning. To each his own.
Maybe because you just entered Uni and don’t really know what is going on (from the bimbo blog posts that you wrote), some times, it is really very stressful to have too many presentations and exams and whatsoever at the same time. And, if there is a possibility of making one’s life easier by asking for a change of presentation dates, why not?
Comment by Whatever — September 22, 2009 @ 2:04 pm
whatever: since when does writing down irrelevant notes help you in learning? also, i’m pointing out the example that although they seem to be really ‘hardworking’ like what you mentioned by copying down everything, obviously that doesn’t translate to intelligence in the quality of questions that they ask.
if everyone else can accept the presentation dates, why can’t that particular person? also, it’s pretty unfair to say that i just entered Uni and so i don’t know this and that, because back when i was doing my diploma in a polytechnic, we had presentations and exams week to week, back to back. everybody dealt with them all the same anyway, so why the exception in Uni?
it’s a blog my dear, it’s an online image. bimbo or not, you wldn’t know till you know the person irl.
people who know me irl know that i’m merely taking a jibe at the JC-ers, that it’s all tongue-in-cheek. so chill.
Comment by Administrator — September 22, 2009 @ 5:09 pm
haha. I haven’t dropped by here in awhile and things got so hot. =) Just sit back and keep laughing while they copy the lecturers pun in hopes to regurgitate it in the exam later.
As for presentations, just continue flipping your red hair in their face.
Comment by Yenswky — September 23, 2009 @ 10:06 pm
u claimed that you are smart then how smart are you in posting such a nonsensical article? be it work-smart or study-smart, you are none. why not spend time to think about what you can do to raise poly’s standards to an equivalent of a JC?

There’s a lot of fury and indignance in the comments here, but if you strip down what MsV is saying, she’s not too far off the mark. Look at what she’s saying and not how she dresses it up.
I don’t see the point as well, in furiously transcribing (nice word for ‘copying’) whatever the guy at the front of the LT says. You become focused on the act of getting the words down accurately onto paper, when one should be processing what has been said instead.
Some may say it’s their own method of learning, but I dare you to maintain a logical line of thought while transcribing words from an audio tape onto paper.
And if the very same people then ask questions that waste the time of the entire class, and cannot maintain a coherent discussion about the very same points raised in lecture, well then, that only reinforces the notion.
Also, spatial ability has very little to do with academic ability, so the same girl who gets lost on campus might very well be the one who whups your ass in the exams. Or she might not be. Besides, she hasn’t gotten any grades yet, so this is all premature.
Comment by West Highland Terror — September 24, 2009 @ 3:52 am
i don’t see why one shouldn’t take their studies seriously in school. the tuition fee is more than 5k a year and transport is around $100 a month(conservative estimate). anyone who don’t want to waste their money would listen attentively in class, whether they copy without listening or just listen without copying. why twitter/blog/surf the internet in class when you can do so before/after class? and seeing that you take taxi from clementi every day, i guess money is not a very big issue for you. and many people take >2 level 2000-3000 modules in their first sem, it’s just advice from administration not to do it because some people might need to ease into the university system. this jc poly comparison is troubling because both are just educational systems put in place by the government for people and their educational needs. and also, personal appearance and the amount of effort one puts into it is just a matter of personal preference. lots of people know how to dress well, and it has nothing to do with their educational background.
and yeah, thank godness you have all your friends helping you get back at other readers who retort you. because one shouldn’t really say something back or comment on a tongue in cheek entry, right??
Comment by wn — September 24, 2009 @ 4:00 pm
west highland terror: now i’m stressed out. i have to get good grades, in order to “raise poly’s standards to an equivalent of a JC”.
wn: i’m too exhausted to repeat myself, please read WHT’s comment with regards to the copying stuff down point.
i don’t understand why you’re raising the point about the taxi-taking. i earn my own keep, so i have the right to decide if i want to take a cab, bus it, or walk. also, my point wasn’t that OH I’M TAKING level 2000/3000 MODULES and being smug about it, but the fact that people were being sarcastic to me upon knowledge of that fact.
i still think jc people are generally less cool and more sheltered.
and yes, comments are always welcome. those like yours which are neutral always are. those like sam’s and tsunami’s, where they make personal insults, aren’t.
if i thought the same way in which you accused me of thinking, i wld have deleted all the negative comments, wouldn’t i?
